Improve defence for a ladies football team playing in a league?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin

Any tips on how my sister can improve her ladies football team’s defence?
They have just joined a league in the north east and played their first two matches.
The first they lost 13-0 and second 20-2, although they played the second and first winning teams from last seasons league.
The coach is a bit lame!
He asks them to stay back and not move forward. Not good at warm ups and training but hes doing it for free and its difficult to find another coach.

man they heavey results… keep the back line strait if ye have pace play a high line and try the offside rule. even if yer caught and cant catch the striker many forwards bottle it with such space in front of them as they have so many option.
if ye do not have two midfielders who can pass the ball (but have one) play that midfielder in the middle of the pitch have yer runners out wide awaiting a pass. pull 1 striker back to giv yer wide plyrs options but try and encourage the wide plyr to the byline as if little else it will waste time nd keep the score lines down.

Without employing the likes of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell etc I don’t know what you can do other than sack the coach!

Okay its a matter of getting down to basics. First and foremost as the girls are running on to pitch all mobile phones, Mascara and eye liners, hair brushes and straighteners, mirrors and nail files should be taken off them and not returned until the final whistle.
Secondly they should be forbidden to have any conversation with anyone unless it shouting instructions and encouragement to their team mates and this should be on footballing matters and not regarding their team mates dress code or hair style. they can of course converse with the referee enquiring as to his vision impairment or other frailties that may come to mind but no personal talk unless it guarantees your side a penalty.
Last and most important tell the girls to go out and enjoy themselves and so what if your team lose. If they have fun then they have this to look back on in their later years

The best way to defend is to get between the ball and the goal, then not overcommit. Delay the progress of the player with the ball and get numbers (more) back behind the ball to help you.
Another tactic is to establish aggressiveness from the start of the game. A couple slide tackles may put the other team off their plan of attack. So, suggest a drill to learn slide tackles. Find a leader on defense and put them in the middle as a ‘Stopper’. Let us know how it goes.

get mean, get aware, the midfielders should always be in touch with a defender behind them and to their left and right, close up the space, think about not having more than 10 yards between any player around you and move as a unit, eg pretend they are all tied together

Get a decent Keeper and then build from there. 2 Central defenders defensive midfielders oh this is hopeless!
