One example:Zinedine Zidane is/was a national hero beacuse of his performances on the French National Soccer team. You can watch highlights of his carreer on Youtube.
People follow soccer as much in France as they do in the UK, or like baseball and football and hockey combined in the US.
Zinedine Zidane head butted an Italian player outside of play during a soccer match causing nation wide shame and outrage, when a few moments before he was a French national hero.
France is not the dovish pro peace state of socialists that the American government tries to tell people they are. Sports are huge.
